A LAND MYSTICAL AND EXOTIC, COLORFUL AND RADIANT

The State of Bahia is located in eastern Brazil, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean along the state's 932 kilometers of coastline, two bays, more than 100 islands and innumerable coves and river deltas. The climate is mild, with an average annual temperature of 27ºC, and the land is caressed by a soft breeze, especially near the seashore. The sun shines almost year-round, which livens the spirit and darkens the skin of a hospitable and friendly people who favor brightly-colored clothes, believe in many gods and make life a never-ending festival.



Gateways to the Land of Happiness

There is an international airport in Salvador, the state capital, through which tourists arrive from all over the world. Direct flights connect Bahia to several countries, and it's also possible to arrive on connections from other Brazilian states. The state's most well-known tourist regions have airports as well, such as Porto Seguro and Ilhéus, which can handle international charter flights. In addition to the airports in Lençóis, in the Chapada Diamantina, Barreiras, Paulo Afonso, Caravelas and the recently planned airport in Valença/Morro de São Paulo, many other cities have landing strips for smaller aircraft. By sea, cruise ships make port in Salvador and Ilhéus, and for smaller vessels, there is a wide variety of marinas and docking sites all along the coast of Bahia. The State's network of paved roads is excellent, linking all the main cities of interest for tourism. Experience Salvador The beauty of Bahia leaves visitors breathless. Salvador, the first capital of Brazil, is the place to start. Forty kilometers of beaches with warm, clear waters are dotted with coconut groves and the ever-present thatched-roof beach huts serving, seafood, tropical drinks and ice-cold beer. Coral reefs and sunken ships in waters with good visibility make Salvador perfect for diving enthusiasts. Salvador's Colonial City is the largest collection of Baroque architecture in Latin America. The Pelourinho or Pelô, as the old city is locally known, is an incredible center for leisure activities both day and night, with its bars, restaurants and shops selling everything from crafts to precious stones, and happy and carefree people who sing and dance to the rhythms of the purest Afro-Brazilian music. The scent of dendê palm oil fills the streets of the Pelô, and is manifested in the delicacies of the Bahian women in traditional white dress, or "Baianas", who sell acarajé and abará, symbols of Bahia's unique cuisine. African gods and goddesses known as orixás who protect the Land of Happiness. Pituaçu Park brings together in one space the exuberance of coastal rainforest vegetation and the wonder of works of art by renown Bahian artists. Abaeté Lagoon Park, famed for its legends and as the inspiration for many well known Bahian songs, offers an incredibly beautiful landscape of white dunes, emerald lagoons and a blue sea, which is perfect for a stroll or a refreshment at one of the park's well equipped bars and restaurants. Those in search of yet stronger emotions will appreciate Salvador's own internationally famous water park, Wet'n Wild. Bahia's Many Options Bahia is blessed with a great variety of tourist destinations. Near Salvador, Praia do Forte, a one-time fishing village, is a true natural paradise with its seemingly endless coconut groves surrounding an international resort, many small hotels, inns and restaurants. A sea turtle preservation station open to visitation has been set up there, since the region is one of the most important spawning grounds for many of the species of sea turtles living in Brazil. The capital of Bahia is located at the mouth of All Saints' Bay, home to more than 50 islands, many of which have marinas and docking sites. The largest and most important island is Itaparica, which can be reached from Salvador by ferry or high speed catamaran. It's also the shortest way to get around the bay and on to many wonderful tourist destinations; take the ferry, cross over to the island and then re-cross Back to the continent via a bridge located on the side of the island opposite from Salvador. On "the Island", as the Bahians call it, there is a wide variety of excellent beaches and hotels, and even an international resort. Crossing All Saints' Bay and Itaparica heading south, a true tropical paradise awaits visitors from all parts of the world: Morro de São Paulo. Located on Tinharé Island, the village's main attraction is its exuberant landscape of vast coconut groves, coves with calm waters and excellent beaches amongst which are nestled modern and comfortable inns and restaurants. Further south, Ilhéus, famous as the setting for many works by the internationally renown Bahian author Jorge Amado, has breathtaking beaches of great beauty, an airport and excellent services, inns and hotels, some of which are the headquarters for deep-sea fishing championships, since one of the best spots in the world for fishing Marlin and other species prized by enthusiasts is located nearby, the Royal Charlotte Bank. Not far from Ilhéus is a must see, the village of Itacaré, a paradise for surfers and nature lovers, with its perfect waves and pristine coastal rainforest vegetation that grows right down to the water's edge along the area's innumerable coves and beaches. Canavieiras and Belmonte, also nearby, besides having beautiful beaches, are home to many species of snook that live in the canals hidden amid the mangroves, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world. The birthplace of Brazil, Porto Seguro, is undoubtedly an international tourist destination par excellence, with its sophisticated beaches, a contagiously up-beat ambiance both day and night and an excellent variety of high quality options for accommodations and dining. Located near the southernmost part of the state, the Abrolhos archipelago is one of the greatest ecological sanctuaries in South America, providing a haven for seabirds migrating from the most diverse regions of the planet, for dolphins, rare fish and coral species, and a stage for the awe-inspiring spectacle of the mating of humpBack whales, from August to November. A paradise for those who appreciate the beauty of the underwater world, visitation is permitted only at certain times of the year, and, even during those periods, only for recreational diving. And Bahia has even more to offer. The Chapada Diamantina mountain range is the guardian of unforgettable surprises for visitors who are awestruck by the rock formations, the incredible valleys stretching as far as the eye can see, the innumerable rivers, waterfalls, lakes, grottoes and caves where expert divers have only now begun to fathom the region's uncharted depths. The mountain climate is propitious for the growth of rare species of orchids and bromeliads, adding yet another wonder to this land of incomparable beauty.
